Autumn Style Inspiration

Oct 9, 2023

Hello and welcome to autumn!

I think we’re there now aren’t we?

The mornings are definitely cooler, the duvet and electric blanket are back on the bed, and I have to admit to having popped the heating on just once or twice.

It’s also the beginning of one of my very favourite months of the year this weekend. I love October for many reasons, not least the fact that it’s the month of my birth, and this year I’m celebrating a VERY big birthday!

Excited doesn’t begin to describe how I’m feeling!!!

Meanwhile, back on planet Earth, if you have kids, they’ll be back into the old routine and if not, you’re probably still feeling that sense of fresh starts and settling back into some sort of routine after the summer – I think autumn always has this feel about it somehow.

With that in mind, I thought this month we’d take a sneak peek at some of the trends you’ll be seeing in the shops to hopefully give you a bit of style inspiration.

Seeing Red

Red is everywhere this season, so you’ll find plenty in the shops.

The bolder red of this Live Unlimited pleated sleeve blouse, is great on warmer colourings, and the V-neckline makes it very flattering on everyone, but in particular those with a fuller bust.

The deeper, cooler reds of the Joe Browns teddy coat will look amazing on you if you have a stronger or cooler colouring, and the Dune bag is great for anyone not wanting to go the whole hog on red but who would prefer to give just a nod to the trend.

If you don’t know which red really suits you, now is definitely the time to invest in a colour consultation and find out.

Silver Linings

High-shine finishes, particularly silver, were included in many of the designer collections on the catwalks this season.

If you have coolness in your colouring then silver is a fabulous metallic for you to wear up near your face, so you might like this Zara knit top, which you could layer a polo neck underneath in cooler months.

However, if you need warmer tones up near your face, then wearing silver on your bottom half could work really well. The pleated skirt, (pleats aren’t going anywhere!), from Mint Velvet might appeal, or if not, accessories or shoes are a great go-with-everything nod to the trend.

The thick soles on these silver trainers will also keep your feet nice and toastie through the coming months!

Cometh The Hourglass

The hourglass silhouette is big news this season. Chunky belts creating cinched in waistlines were on show on the catwalks, as well as wide shoulders with neat waistlines and skinny belts.

So, if you have a defined waist now is the time to show it off!

The Reiss dress here will look fabulous if you have a Neat Hourglass body shape as it will simply echo your shape.

The Emily and Fin needlecord jumpsuit has a tailored bodice top, belt and wider leg trousers, and the Boden dress includes a belt at the waistline.

You don’t have to be an hourglass shape to recreate this look though. Depending on your shape, you might be able to choose styles that create breadth at the shoulders and/or hemline to visually make the waist appear smaller.

Peplums can be good too, as per the Ted Baker top.

If you are a fuller hourglass don’t forget to think fabric, fabric, fabric – fluid fabrics will flatter your curves perfectly whereas crisp fabrics can add unnecessary bulk.

If you don’t know your body shape, why not invest in a shape consultation and find out everything you need to know about dressing for your shape and proportions?

Moody Autumn Blooms

Of all the prints, winter florals have been the most prolific on the catwalks for autumn and winter, so there are plenty in the shops.

The key to wearing prints is to think about the size of print you choose – smaller prints will suit you if you are petite in height and/or scale (bone structure), whereas larger prints will flatter you if you are taller or larger in scale.

This mixed pattern wrap style top from Fat Face is great on those with an average or petite scale, as well as being very flattering on fuller busts, and the Joe Browns dress would also suit those with a smaller bone structure.

The French Connection dress however, is better on those of an average to larger scale, as is the Ted Baker jumper as well as providing that extra warmth for winter.
